eu's plans to toughen up on e-waste are misguided

 

There is a global trend in consumers constantly upgrading their technology for the latest must-have gadget, without considering what happens to it once it is outdated. The proposed tougher e-waste targets outline ambitious recycling targets, but only suggest that the target for reusing unwanted equipment is 5%.

WEEE Systems believes that without stipulating the importance of reusing end-of-life E&E equipment the growing e-waste problem can never be completely solved. Without an effective material transformation ecosystem, businesses will continue to recycle obsolete E&E equipment without taking advantage of the revenue opportunity available and the chance to create a highly skilled and specialised workforce in the repair industry. If more devices were re-used and returned into the marketplace, it would reduce the illegal dumping of this equipment abroad.
